Set over the course of a single day in Dublin, 16 June 1904, this novel follows Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and Molly Bloom. Joyce builds the book from ordinary movements, conversations and thoughts, turning one city's daily rhythm into a broad picture of human experience.

One day, three lives

The story stays close to its characters as they move through Dublin, letting their inner lives shape the novel as much as the events around them. Stephen, Leopold and Molly each bring a different perspective, and together they define the book's scale and texture.

Its place in modernism

Ulysses survived censorship, controversy and legal action, and was even called blasphemous. At the same time, it became one of the central works of modernism, known for being inventive, talkative, funny, sorrowful, vulgar and lyrical, sometimes all at once.

It confirms Joyce's belief that literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'.
