John Steinbeck był amerykańskim pisarzem i dziennikarzem, laureatem nagrody Pulitzera w 1940 roku oraz literackiej Nagrody Nobla w 1962 r. Urodził się w Salinas w 1902 roku. Studiował na Stanford University, ale nigdy nie uzyskał dyplomu. Za jego najwybitniejsze dzieła uznawane są powieści takie, jak „Na wschód od Edenu”, „Myszy i ludzie” oraz „Grona Gniewu”. Jego powieści były wielokrotnie ekranizowane. Steinbeck zmarł w 1968 roku w Nowym Jorku.
