Milan Kundera urodził się w 1929 roku w Brnie. Jest czeskim i francuskim pisarzem. Absolwent literatury na Uniwersytecie Karola w Pradze. Zaangażowany m.in. w Praską Wiosnę. W 1975 roku wyemigrował do Francji, gdzie przebywa do dzisiaj. Obecnie odcina się od czeskiej kultury i zabrania m.in. przekładów swoich książek na język czeski. Czytelnikom na świecie znany jest przede wszystkim dzięki powieści „Nieznośna lekkość bytu”, zekranizowanej w 1988 roku przez Philipa Kaufmana.
