Autorka poczytnych powieści - m.in. takich, jak „Podróż w świat”, „Noc i dzień”, czy „Między aktami” oraz opowiadań. Była lesbijką. Cierpiała na liczne załamania nerwowe. W 1941 roku, w wieku 59 lat popełniła samobójstwo, topiąc się w rzece.
